Jugo de Acerola

Acerola Juice

In Puerto Rico, it is acerola season. Acerola is a fruit rich in Vitamin C (it has 20 to 30 times more than an orange). Fruits high in Vitamin C like acerola are very convenient since they have high levels of antioxidants. Acerola resembles a cherry, but it is not the same. Its skin is red but its flesh is a little more orange.

I was in my hometown of Aguada for Mother's Day weekend and had the opportunity to pick acerola berries from the tree in my aunt's yard. With the acerola berries we picked, I made acerola jam and juice. Acerola juice is delicious on its own and also when mixed into a drink with Vodka.

This is the acerola tree in my aunt's patio in Aguada.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of acerola cherries
  • Water
  • Sugar (to taste)

    Preparation:

    1. Wash the acerola cherries.
    2. Add the fruits to a blender or food processor.
    3. Add water until it covers the acerola cherries.
    4. If you use a blender, use the highest speed until you see that the seeds have separated from the fruit pulp. If you use a food processor, you can pulse 3 to 4 times and the result should be the same.
    5. Use a strainer to separate the seeds from the juice. You can use a spoon to help separate the pulp and seeds.
    6. Taste and add sugar to taste.
    7. Chill in the refrigerator or serve with ice.

      Health!
